On dance floors, I pre-focus a 24mm at about 1.5 m, f/4, ISO 3200, and ride 1/60 with rear-curtain — faces stay crisp and the lights paint the rest. If the DJ’s firing strobes, I ditch rear-curtain and go 1/125 no flash to avoid random ghosts. I tell myself “wait for the chorus” and the hit gives me the beat to click.

After last week’s chat on lighting, I switched to highlight-weighted metering on the dance floor — strobes stopped nuking faces and skin stays clean… If your body doesn’t have it, dial -0.7 to -1 EV and ride the histogram; “protect the face, let the lights go wild.” I’ll bump ISO to 6400 and lift shadows later rather than risk blown cheeks.

Quick tip: match your shutter to the venue power (1/50 or 1/100 for 50 Hz, 1/60 or 1/120 for 60 Hz) and enable anti-flicker/high-frequency mode — those DJ LEDs cause nasty banding; see Learn Photography & Explore Our Articles | Nikon. Since last week’s candid thread, this saved a ton of frames for me; tiny caveat: anti-flicker adds a bit of lag — — so I time bursts on the beat. Anyone keeping a 50/60 Hz preset to swap fast?
