USB-C tethering keeps dropping on set

Last night a tiny bump on the orange Tether Tools USB‑C dropped my Capture One session with a Canon R6 on an M1 MacBook Pro — same thing keeps showing up with my Z6 II even with fresh cables and direct ports. Is there a USB‑C lock/port saver or right‑angle setup that stops the wiggle disconnects on set?

But this drives me nuts too… What fixed it for my R6 on an M1 MBP was a SmallRig cable clamp on the cage plus a right‑angle USB‑C at the camera, and a 6‑inch USB‑C male‑female “port saver” taped to the cart on the Mac side so any bumps hit the extension, not the ports. Do you have a cage for a clamp, or want a laptop‑side option only?

Moving the stress off the MBP fixed it for me: a tiny TB4 hub velcro’d to the cart with an OWC ClingOn on the hub, then a 0.5 m “sacrificial” USB‑C into the Mac so the hub takes the bumps: Other World Computing - CLINGON Item Not Found If you really need to stay direct, the Angelbird USB‑C 3.2 90° grip feels tighter than the orange Tether Tools, though it’s a bit stiffer.

That ‘tiny bump’ is the stiff orange jacket doing you in — swap to a super‑limp silicone C‑to‑C (Anker 641 “Flow”) and a low‑profile right‑angle at the camera so shocks don’t torque the port. If you still need USB 3 speeds, keep a short USB4/TB4 cable to the M1 MBP and use the silicone as a sacrificial lead on the R6/Z6 II. @beaver571’s hub trick helps, but the softer cable alone stopped my on‑set dropouts.

Give the cable a slack “seatbelt” at both ends so the port never takes the hit: clip a Tether Tools TetherGuard to the camera strap lug, gaff a loose loop to the tripod, and repeat /computer side so bumps get absorbed before the connector (https://tethertools.com/product/tetherguard-cable-support/). If you want extra insurance, a magnetic breakaway rated 10Gbps can help, but cheap ones can add jitter and drop in Capture One under load.

I’d fix it at the camera: add a cage with a cable clamp and run a 10–15 cm C pigtail into a metal C‑to‑C coupler zip‑tied to the cage so any tug hits the coupler, not the port. SmallRig’s cage + clamp for the R6/Z6 II works well (example: https://www.smallrig.com) and killed my random Capture One drops. If you’d rather skip a cage, a stick‑on aluminum cable anchor near the strap lug plus the short pigtail is a decent plan — do you already have a cage on either body?

What fixed it for me was putting the right‑angle on the Mac side and taping it flat to the chassis, so a “tiny bump” flexes a cheap 10Gbps 90° adapter like this UGREEN one (https://www.ugreen.com/products/usb-c-90-degree-adapter) instead of the M1 port. Been solid for me on long nights since — do you have space to run the 90° along the left edge of the MacBook?
